1965 | |
January | Throughout this month, RLBFDIA 5B is in development outside the usual editing studio. Meanwhile (until the 26th), the contestants continue to crank. |
2 January | The first part of RLBFDIA 5, "Get in the Van", is released (while filming and editing of the main episode was still in progress). Meanwhile, the contestants continue to crank. Notable extras that appear in this episode (scouted 10 October to 17 October 1964): Rafael Kregelin |

|
5 February | RLBFDIA 5C: Editing is finished. |
RLBFDIA 5D: Editing commences.
11 February | The second part of RLBFDIA 5 is released (while editing of the main episode was still in progress). The episode, known only as "5B", was actually published as a newspaper comic strip. Production-wise, it was a welcome departure from the television episodes, only because most of the cast had no rôle in the events of this mini-episode. |

|
12 August | RLBFDIA 6: The editing process is cut short[9] and the series is declared cancelled. The reason given was that the entire budget for the show had been spent and there were no savings left.[10] |
The contestants learned of the cancellation on this day and were immediately sent back to their home countries, under the condition that they return together at some point in the future. But until then, they were allowed to live normal civilian lives. In some cases, they were treated like celebrities for giving their countries a good name. In others, they were ostracized.
| |
1 September | RLBFDIA 6 was expected to come out on this day. |
The inter-season hiatus (1966–1968)[]
For a reason unknown at the time, RLBFDI goes on hiatus. In 1968, many believe that the programme is cancelled because the former contestants have been living normal lives for at least two years.
1966 | |
6 March | RLBFDI is officially in hiatus as of this date. This is not announced to the public until 3 March 1968. |
After six years, Jacknjellify return to the United States, but only for a temporary period.
1967 | |
March | Jacknjellify move back to Kenya. |
Hiatus coming to an end (1967–1968)[]
A third season is certainly in production, but no one outside the production of the series knows about it.
1967 | |
12 December | The third season of RLBFDI is announced privately (among the contestants only).[12] No one is up for voting and all contestants are to be in the same position they were in for most of 1965, i.e., the end of RLBFDIA. |
1968 | |
c. 12 March | Changes in state: Phuong dyes her hair white for no particular reason.[13] |
The RLIDFB era (1967–1968)[]
Pre-RLIDFB (1967–1968)[]
The era for which RLBFDI's second season is the newest one, although a third season is in production.
1968 (cont'd.) | |
23 July | RLBFDI Is Back, a promotional film announcing the release date of the third season of RLBFDI, is released as a live broadcast. It stars Columbus, Frederic, Iris and Nathalia in front of the camera, while Flora lends her voice. The short was filmed near Chicago, where Columbus and Frederic live. |
29 July to 2 August | (Without refusal) all the contestants arrive at the new location (Yoyle City, Yoyleland) based on where they were previously: those coming in from Europe, Israel and North Africa (Belle, Blaine, Claude, Fannie, Frankie, Gabriel, Honorata, Khaled, Leo, Lulu, Marc, Sana, Simon, Thérèse and Yitzhak) arrive first (29 July), those from the rest of Asia (Abbie) arrive a day later (30 July), those from the rest of Africa (Arbutus, Bilal, Bomby, Donald, Dora, Eddie, Renata, Roboty and Rocky), arrive a day after that (31 July), those from the Americas (Ady, Barbara, Bethel, Briselda, Columbus, David, Eugenia, Flora, Freddy, Frederic, G.P., Jake, Joe, Joaquin, Katja, Lina, Maja, Nathalia[14], Nick, Paula, Peggy, Phuong, Spongy, Thomas, Toni, T.V. a day after that (1 August) and those from Oceania (Naily and Terry) a day after that (2 August).
|
3 August | The contestants that were inside the LOL in RLBFDIA 6 (Abbie, Ady, Arbutus, Barbara, Belle, Bethel, Bilal, Blaine, Briselda, Claude, David, Donald, Dora, Eddie, Fannie, Freddy, Gabriel, G.P., Honorata, Jake, Joe, Katja, Khaled, Leo, Lina, Lulu, Maja, Marc, Naily, Paula, Peggy, Renata, Roboty, Sana, Simon, Terry, Thérèse, Toni, T.V.) are sent back there, where the desire to escape has become much stronger. |
5 August | The photographs for the intro are captured. |
12 August | RLIDFB 1: Most of the episode is filmed.[15]
|
13 August | RLIDFB 1: The post-credits scene is filmed. Editing commences as the contestants go on break. |
23 August | RLIDFB 1: Editing is finished. |
Excerpts from the filming of RLBFDIA 6 are released to the public, albeit in vinyl record form. |
RLIDFB (1968–1969)[]
The era for which RLBFDI's third season is the newest one.
1968 (cont'd.) | |
1 September | The third season of RLBFDI, RLIDFB, comes out with its first (and, as of 1973, only) episode, "Welcome Back". |
10 to 11 September | RLIDFB 2: Most of the episode is filmed.
|
12 September | RLIDFB 2: The post-credits scene is filmed. |
RLIDFB 2: The editing phase begins, or at least it should. The automatic editors have been in a total state of disrepair. Although the aesthetic quality of the series improved greatly over the years, the sixties have finally taken their toll on the old computers, which have broken down on this day. With no computer editors to do the work and no human editors to quickly hire before the episode's deadline, there is now no choice but to shelve RLIDFB.
25 September | The "free" contestants learn about the hiatus of RLIDFB on this date. |
27 September | The cast are all sent back to their home countries.
|
1 October | RLIDFB 2 was expected to be released on this day. Due to technological errors, it was postponed to 1 December 1968. |
2 October | Paper Towel, the second of the RLBFDI shorts, is released as a live, silent broadcast. It stars Ady and Joe (with G.P. making a very quick cameo)—the latter had led his mates in search of his old girlfriend Penelope, who stayed in Yoyleland after RLIDFB's cancellation. Therefore, this was filmed from somewhere in Kenya. |
6 October | The RLBFDI crew hold their first meet-up at an international food festival in Brooklyn, New York, where local vendors show visitors to the Big Apple the cuisines for which they are known. The yoylecake (as it is now known) is introduced here not by the Turkish foods section, but at McRae's, a "Negro business"[17] that Americanized the recipe with the community's approval. Jake McRae, a former RLBFDIA contestant-hopeful, made an appearance (at his own family's bakery at that), but since he only appeared on screen for a few seconds in 1964, hardly anyone recognized him from the show.[18] |
1 December | RLIDFB 2 was expected to be released on this day. Due to even more technological errors, it was postponed indefinitely. |
1969 | |
24 February | RLBFDI has a second meet-up, this time in a much more intimate place. The crew meet some fans at a gas station in San Francisco, but their meeting happens at the same time and place as a gathering of hippies. |
23 to 25 April | RLBFDI has a third meet-up, one that is actually less advertised, even though it takes place in a larger area. Jacknjellify return to Africa for a three-day tour of the continent, visiting Accra, Lusaka and Nairobi in front of thousands of onlookers. |
24 June | The fourth meet-up of RLBFDI takes place two days after it is announced, presented in a short film in which animated versions of the characters throw rubber balls to one another. It is an informal gathering that takes place on Easter Island. |
Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 At the time of selection, this character is dead.
- ↑ The real one!
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 For a period of time so long that it would seem unethical otherwise. It is assumed that they have food.
- ↑ In this case, "day" could also refer to an episode since this is a continuous storyline.
- ↑ BFDIA 2: 3:42–44. "It'll take months of walking." I'm interpreting this to mean that one walks from Kenya to Turkey (and vice versa) for at least one month.
- ↑ 6.0 6.1 6.2 This place has no official name.
- ↑ BFDIA 5C: "It could take anywhere from a few weeks to over a month!"
- ↑ 8.0 8.1 Interpret that how you wish.
- ↑ The meta reason for this is that the deleted scenes of BFDIA 6 are two minutes long, i.e., it took two days to edit this episode.
- ↑ BFB 29: Announcer said so, so it must be true.
- ↑ Actually, we still don't know who recovered him, or when.
- ↑ The beginning of TWOW isn't a good example of the confirmation that there was going to be a third season, but when it did come out, it meant a turning point in Jacknjellify's content posting.
- ↑ IDFB 1: 7:39. "So, Pin, it's been about six months."
- ↑ Nathalia was spending the summer in the U.S. to film RLBFDIIB. And to be with Columbus.
- ↑ IDFB 1: 1:08. "Three years of our work has just vanished in an instant!" I presume they had just started filming on the day the series was cancelled, 13 August 1965.
- ↑ Instead of going into the LOL, the highest-voted contestant was to leave it.
- ↑ What we would call a Black-owned bakery these days.
- ↑ This could have been one of the motives why a fourth season was made with all the rejected competitors.
