Pre-RLBFDI (1960–1961)[]
All RLBFDI-related events that happened before RLBFDI's premiere.
1960 | |
5 February | Inspired by the decolonization movements sweeping the African continent, Jacknjellify move from the United States to Nairobi, Kenya (which is still a colony). |
20 February | Jacknjellify send out casting calls to the people of the world for a new television series. No one knows what it's about, but stacks of applications come in nonetheless, mostly consisting of those sent by young children. |
2 May | The first name placed on the list of accepted future cast members is that of Frederic Collins, an unremarkable Virginia-born high school student from Chicago. |
6 May | Letters are sent out informing the first five candidates that they have been accepted onto the new show. They are sent personally to Frederic and Maja Zanaroff, the only other over-10 to send in an audition form. In 1960, Maja is a Canadian who had dropped out of school and moved to New York at seventeen to become a waitress.
In addition to these two, letters are also sent to the Spongy-Karjalainens (in Michigan), the Cohls (in Luxembourg) and the Guttas (in New Zealand), the families of three most interesting of the unassuming children. Their names are Spongy,[1] Thérèse and Woody, respectively. |
10 June | More letters are sent to the only over-10s found in the pile a month ago: One goes to Kathy Jinko (a Turkish teenager) and the other two to Penelope Carvalho and Joe Graffeo—the latter two having been recommended by Maja, who calls Penelope her best friend from Kenya and Joe her stepbrother and boyfriend. |
2 September | The largest number of letters is sent in one batch. Some don't even make it that far (like to Rocky Mohamed in Zanzibar, or to Simon Burger in a cave in England), while others go to the United States. These recipients are Flora Harvey (a middle-aged aristocrat from Boston), Ady Deeb (a self-proclaimed greaser from New York), Columbus Lincoln (a Chicago high school student of noticeable lineage), Eugenia and Thomas Ball (resp. a school principal and a mathematics teacher in Iowa) and Iris Tsukuda (a six-year-old from Hawaii whose parents were interned during the war). |
1961 | |
April | Inspired by the ever-popular sporting pageants, Jacknjellify change the format of the future series from a regular comedy show to a competition show for people of all ages. But with this change of genre comes a need for more competitors. |
July | Jnj are in correspondence with some of the participants about who should be added to the series. The wishes of the only four to talk to them are granted: Those potentially included in the series are Nathalia Carvalho (a high schooler and sister of Penelope, who recommended her), G.P. Graffeo (a college student and brother of his recommender, Joe), Lela Pearson (recommended by Frederic, her clandestine husband by whom she is pregnant) and Phuong Nguyen (recommended by Columbus, who ripped her picture from the headlines and has since called her his wife, even though she lives in Vietnam). |
4 August | These four new contestants are officially added to the roster. |
23 to 26 October | All the contestants arrive on location based on where they were previously: those coming in from East Africa (Nathalia, Penelope and Rocky) arrive first (23 October), those from Europe (Kathy, Simon and Thérèse) and Asia (Phuong) arrive a day later (24 October), those from mainland North America (Ady, Columbus, Eugenia, Flora, Frederic, G.P., Joe, Lela, Maja, Spongy and Thomas) arrive a day after that (25 October) and those from the Pacific Islands (Iris and Woody) arrive a day after that (26 October). |
30 October | As preparation for the filming for RLBFDI commences, all the contestants meet the showrunners, who tell them to act naturally. For many of the younger ones, this isn't really possible. |
5 November | Age-averaged: Ady, Columbus, Eugenia, Flora, Frederic, G.P., Iris, Joe, Kathy, Lela, Maja, Nathalia, Penelope, Phuong, Rocky, Simon, Spongy, Thérèse, Thomas and Woody |
6 November | RLBFDI 1: The pre-credits scenes are filmed, including the flashback with Flora and Iris.

7 November | The intro is filmed; or, more accurately, photographed. |

25 November | RLBFDI 1: Editing is finished. |

Notes[]
- ↑ The name through which the audition was sent; it stuck.
- ↑ Interpret that how you wish.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 It might have been over one day, since this character had no Recovery Center.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 For a period of time so long that it would seem unethical otherwise. It is assumed that they have food.
- ↑ Rule of thumb: whenever editing commences (what is meant by "E.C."), the contestants have their break.
- ↑ Another rule of thumb: When someone is brought back, it usually means they come back to wherever the main filming place is. In RLBFDI and RLBFDIA, that place is Nairobi, Kenya. In RLIDFB, it's Yoyle City, Yoyleland, Turkey. In RLBFB and RLTPOT, it's Somewhere in Kenya or Afghanistan, depending on the part of the season it's in.
- ↑ BFDI 18: 0:16. "I've been in here for sixteen months…" Obviously, she doesn't mean "precisely sixteen months".
- ↑ Oh yeah, ambiguous situations will be shown in green.
- ↑ BFDI 4 (10:01; "in three weeks") and BFDI 5 (0:01).
- ↑ Contrary to the sky's changing colours seemingly hundreds of times at 3:03, this only lasted one weekend.
- ↑ "NC" = non-contestant
- ↑ It might have been over one day, since this character had no Recovery Center.
- ↑ As of this episode, recovery is something that doesn't require a Recovery Center to appear on screen.
- ↑ 14.0 14.1 For a period of time so long that it would seem unethical otherwise. It is assumed that they have food.
- ↑ The real-life analogue of using puppets for an animated series, I suppose.
- ↑ Abbie isn't included here to spare her the cruelty. The cake for this episode was just a blueberry pie with a face drawn on it.
- ↑ 17.0 17.1 17.2 17.3 Failed attempt at age-averaging for this contestant.
- ↑ "CH" = contestant-hopeful
- ↑ Post-credits scenes are (usually) filmed after midnight, one day after the scenes that come directly before.
- ↑ 20.0 20.1 20.2 Interpret that how you wish.
- ↑ BFDI 24: 7:23. According to Lela, the four of them faked their deaths before the Announcer.
