Alternate title: How I Sent DeviantArt Almost a Hundred Search Queries All Because I Wanted to Look at Humans.
Note on charts[]
If "0%" is in white, it means that no artist has given this particular (skin/eye/hair) colour to this particular contestant. If "0%" is in black, it means that at least one has done so, except that the percentage of the total is rounded down to 0.
Lastly, not all totals will add up to 100 due to rounding.
The quest for knowledge[]
Well, it wasn't just DeviantArt, it was Google Images and a bit of Reddit as well.
This was admittedly one of the more fun, if time-consuming, things I had done in developing RLBFB. In fact, it's the thing that inspired me to start this whole mini-series when I saw what other people had done.
It was the end of 2020, the tenth year of BFDI's existence, and a huge community had formed from it. So much art had been done of every character in BFB, but what interested me the most was the most variable theme of all: 擬人化. This could come in many forms, from fan fiction to multimedia presentations (oh, they're out there). But what I wanted to focus on was the drawn art of the anthropomorphized versions of the objects and what people did with them.
I had no intention of copying their style or anything (I cannot draw humans for the life of me), but just wanted to analyse the general direction of trends in BFDI-related artwork. I just looked at what appears at the top of Google Image Search when I searched "BFDI/BFB human", or just "human" if I was on the BFDI subreddit.[1] I did the same for my search in DeviantArt, but since there are 64 contestants—21 of whom participated in BFDI—I had to do a large number of searches,[2] not to mention my looking at the top 10 or so pages of "BFDI/BFB human" just to record my observations. And what I found was shocking.

Skin[]
As you may have seen in the "nationalities and ethnicities" section, my headcanons about the appearance of the contestants are pretty much immutable. But with looks come stereotypes, especially in relation to skin colour. It's important to know that not all Irish people are pale and not every Kenyan is dark black, and while some of my nationality headcanons match those of with others, there are other artists out there who want you to know that too.
The following table refers to the Fitzpatrick scale, which is used to determine the sensitivity of different skin types to sunlight. It is also used to quantitatively measure a person's skin colour, and that's what I did with every drawing of a 擬人化-passed contestant I came across. There are many examples online.

Eyes[]
They say that eyes are the windows to the soul, but I ain't getting any of that when I stare at those black ovals that (most) object show characters have as looking-holes. Probably no one else is either; that's why many artists, when creating their 擬人化 forms for the contestants, have them looking all pretty with eye colours that hardly anyone in our world has.
Here you will see the average eye colours assigned by these same artists to all the BFB contestants.
Before I begin, a note: The colours come in thirty-seven categories, but because I realized I couldn't fit that many columns into one table on this wiki, I've decided to split them into as few categories as possible.

Hair[]
I've saved the best for last; this is the least varied—but coolest, nonetheless—of all characteristics.
The whole reason I did my own 擬人化 version of BFB entirely in the style of the 1960s was this section. And I'm not talking about that American tribal love-rock musical. I don't think there's ever been a series of drawings by an artist who didn't use any fantastic hair colours for any of the contestants. That should bother me deeply, but it's actually a good thing, in more ways than one.
In a few cases, a contestant had not one but two hair colours (shocking!). If this was the case, I took the average between the two by adding two-thirds of the points from the primary colour and the rest from the secondary colour to the total.
I have divided the hair colours into thirty-nine categories—an artist can choose any colour they want and call it so, but for simplicity and so that you don't have to scroll down while looking at a table, I have further simplified the categories for the percentages.

"Realizing" the process[]
I made this image in December, shortly after I created the XKCD-styled timeline of RLBFDI hairstyles (still unfinished, but explained on the AESTHETICS page). It's pretty inaccurate considering that the RLBFB contestants' backstories were explained, thus rendering many colours inaccurate or inappropriate.[29] I'm posting it here only to show my attempt to make the fan-determined hair colours and eye colours more realistic, not for the 1960s (that part of the timeline was done later), but for the "present day", whenever that should be.[30]
Of course, if you have purple hair in real life, your natural hair colour is probably anything, so I just went to the nearest realistic form to which I could convert each colour. Light green hair became blond, while dark red eyes became a mellower brown. I then took the average of those average colours.
Not only that, but I've also made the colours "culture-specific". For whatever reason,[31] it is less likely to see a darker-skinned person with light hair or eyes (although it is not impossible). I don't remember the exact method I used to get this, but I took the average lightness of each contestant's skin and gave separate linear-based probabilities for someone of that colour having light hair and eyes. That score influenced what their new hair and eye colour would be. And I have to say, I was fairly proud of the results.
I didn't use all of them in RLBFB because of conflicts with the contestants' origins—Pencil, a (black) Kenyan in the human universe, wouldn't have fairer skin or hair than Match, a (white) Ashkenazi Jew. But many colours were simply transferred from the originals, such as Lollipop with dark (not purple) skin or Fanny, Clock and some others with blue eyes.
Exochromic observations[]
Hair and eyes are not the only things people focus on when they make their 擬人化, hardly so. Just as people do in real life, 擬人化-passed contestants often use accessories to make their own appearance special. In other cases, they may not follow the common aesthetic trends that are common among drawn human beings, especially stick figures. All of these certainly has some significance among the detail-oriented folk on DeviantArt, so I have documented what they have done here.
Note:
- Some of the words I have used may not correspond to what the artist had in mind. I recorded this section in another language and translated it to English.
- I'm also using the percentages based on the number of skin-colour samples I collected, not the other measurements.
- The small text next to the percentages is the number of instances of a particular colour with (most) characteristics. Without a number, just assume one.

- ↑ Apparently white hair is considered almost the same as blond hair, just not exactly. I don't know the difference between "platinum blond" and related shades.
- ↑ Also known as "ginger" in some circles.
- ↑ Yes, it's true that cyan is meant to be right between green and blue, but most of the characters to whom cyan hair was applied were blue in their object forms.
- ↑ Not "dirty" or anything, just not fitting.
- ↑ I'm guessing when they were first drawn, i.e. the second half of the 2010s and most of 2020.
- ↑ Genetics, most likely.
- ↑ Called "sweatbands" in the modern era, these were quite popular in the early 1920s. They've apparently made a comeback during BFB.
- ↑ It might have got lost in translation.
- ↑ Not really common in our world, it's meant to jut out of the head much as do those of some objects.
- ↑ That's it; I've only got it written as "hair ornaments".
- ↑ More information here; I must admit that I did not know of this condition before.
